First Wasps Nest of 2012

We posted earlier this month about how wasps will be venturing out early due to the better weather conditions. This morning the team tackled their first wasps nest of the year. John from the team managed to snap a photo for us. Wasps nest are relatively small at the beginning of the season but as time goes on the nest gets larger and larger, with more and more wasps inhabiting it. The Search for the Black Squirrel

Anglia Ruskin University are co-ordinating a study into the difference between black and grey squirrels and their spread across the nation and Direct Pest Control are helping!! Black and Grey squirrels are the same species and grey squirrels carry the grey squirrel pox which infects red squirrels. The first we knew about black squirrels in the UK was 100 years ago and unlike the grey squirrel which came into several ports in the UK, the entire black squirrel population came from Bedfordshire. Direct Pest Control is helping track the DNA of squirrels in our area and find out if the Black Squirrel carries the same grey squirrel pox that endangers our red squirrel population.

So if you see a black squirrel around West Yorkshire, let us know. We’d love to hear about it.

Direct Pest Control – Wicked Wasps Warning

Wasp activity last year saw Direct Pest Control treat 100 wasps nests due to the mild spring and unseasonably warm weather created perfect nesting conditions for wasps. This year we have the same issues. So take note of your first sightings of wasps this year as it may be a sign of things to come. The mild spring last year meant that queen wasps came out of hibernation sooner than usual, which meant they started building nests earlier in the year. Usually the nest is smaller than a golf ball to start with, she lays her eggs inside and feeds them until they hatch. These first worker wasps take over the task of making the nest larger and providing for new eggs. By the end of the summer the nest has normally grown considerably, normally football sized to several feet wide it usually has between 2500 to 5000 wasps at this point.

As the nest matures towards the end of summer, wasps no longer need to feed or care for new eggs, at this point they stop looking for insects like green flies etc and instead search for sweet treats and natural sources of sweetness like berries, fruit, sweets, cakes etc. They are attracted to sugary substances.

Naturally Autumn usually sees wasps become more aggressive as food sources decline as the weather changes the extra time provided by a mild spring means that wasps are given the opportunity to make bigger nests and increase their population. Obviously this means that there are more wasps around in autumn and even less food which encourages wasps to look elsewhere for food sources other than their natural food sources, driving them into peoples, shed, outhouse’s and homes.

So watch out for your first wasps this year and let us know when you see those creepy crawlies about. Direct Pest Control BBC Debut and Other News

Exciting news for Direct Pest Control. Did you tune in to watch us on Inside Out on the BBC? Ryan and John from the team were filmed doing a removal of bed bugs in a students accommodation in Leeds and it turned out to be one of the worst cases they had ever seen. Direct Pest Control were also in the Huddersfield Examiner the very same day!! You can see the article online here

Bed Bug Removal on the BBC

Direct Pest Control carrying out Bed Bug Treatment on the BBC

During October 2011 Direct Pest Control were filmed by the BBC carrying out a bed bug treatment in a house in Leeds, West Yorkshire. The piece which was filmed for the BBC’s Inside Out series will be shown on Monday the 6th of February at 7:30pm.

The piece,which also has input from academics explaining the life cycle of the bed bug and how they travel from home to home, will show Direct Pest Control‘s Bed Bug removal, through the use of cleaning and insecticidal treatment.

Direct Pest Control travelled to Leeds from their base in Huddersfield to carry out the work, and were chosen in part for their accredited membership of the NPTA (National Pest Technicians Association) and their level of qualification (RSPH level 2 in Pest Management). As you will see the infestation was quite severe and affected not only the bedrooms but the soft furnishings in the living room as well!

We are happy to report that the treatment was a success and all is now well at the affected property in Leeds.
